Ah, yes. Because always, all the time, if someone gives somebody a prize, that automatically and necessarily means they deserved it and are the best in their field.
I think you’re pretty massively missing the point of my post. Which doesn’t surprise me, as making up intent so that you can pretend that your snarky little gif sets are legitimate criticism and insight rather than the substanceless bitching that it really is being kind of the go-to style of Moffat hate.
My point isn’t that having an Emmy automatically makes Steven Moffat a good writer, and that everyone has to love his work. My point is that having an Emmy does, in fact, make Steven Moffat pretty irrefutably a critically acclaimed writer. Which means that you don’t get to take the default position of “Steven Moffat sucks.” If you are going to take that position, then you now have a responsibility to respond to the critical consensus, not just by saying that it’s wrong, but saying why it’s wrong - responding to what is praised about Steven Moffat’s work and arguing specifically why the critics are wrong about that.
You know, I’ve been snarking off on this post, but you make an excellent post. When we voted to appoint our representatives to the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in order to represent our opinions and tastes, we agreed to be bound by the decisions they made in awarding Emmys.
Hang on, I’ve just been handed a memo.
It turns out that we didn’t vote for them. They’re just a bunch of industry insiders whose decisions are as likely to be based around career politics and industry buzz or even—gasp—personal taste as they are actual art criticism.
So I’m not sure what your point is here.
I mean, personally, Moffat has done writing that I would give him a trophy for. I would give him three trophies and a pizza party for some of his best writing.
But I’ve yet to see a piece of criticism against him that was not fundamentally sound, and even at his best, he really needs a strong editor, someone to provide a female voice, and a showrunner (not him) with a firm hand. Which doesn’t happen with him running the show, and if you compare his work now to his work in earlier seasons, his deficiencies are startlingly clear.
As Donna said of the Doctor, he needs someone to stop him.
